Lost for words about what an amazing night was had at GRUNGE NIGHT with Hands Off Gretel, Third Angle Projection, killer BOB and Lauren Marie on the weekend... We sold out of prize draw tickets and raised £201 for RSVP WEST MIDLANDS 😁💷💰💜
This included donations directly from Hands Off Gretel, Third Angle Projection and the venue - Wagon & Horses in Digbeth. Thank you to Sharon for being an excellent host. So very grateful to everyone for contributing to the DIY ethic; bands watching each other the entire night, no egos and supporting local community charities. All this whilst paying musicians fair wages.
Lauren Marie provided opening support for the night, with her spellbinding, introspective solo acoustic set which the audience respectfully appreciated. There was no talking over her performance as sometimes can happen during singer-songwriter shows - everyone listened intently and personally I found this a deeply moving experience. Her song "I went on holiday and it was awful" left me with tears openly rolling down my cheeks. Heartbreakingly self-confessional, brave and beautiful - like the artist herself.
Next up was Third Angle Projection, featuring guest drummer Pete Von Doom from killer BOB. The Tipper Brothers Dean and Arron entertained the burgeoning crowd; including Hands Off Gretel who started rocking out at the front. It was awesome to see the headliners, who are undoubtedly fast gaining national and international acclaim, supporting the local bands and scene in this way. DIY ethos at its finest. Nat from killer BOB hopped up on stage to join the lads for a cover of "Breed" by Nirvana and the band left the stage to their propulsive track "Wake Up", with audience members asking who they were and heaping praise on their live performance.
Main support of the night came from noisy aggro grungers killer BOB, who recently emptied the room at a recent Birmingham show at The Actress and Bishop. However, tonight saw the audience firmly on BOB's side - rocking out to originals which Sean from HoG said reminded him of Melvins and Tad. He went on to say when killer BOB ripped into a cover of 'Honey Bucket' by the Melvins, he downed his drink at the bar and rushed back to the front of the stage to rock out. Amazing!
Of course, everyone was here to see Hands Off Gretel - the hype around this alternative grunge/pop rock band is to be believed. Lauren Tate is doing things her own way and her hard work is paying off in bucket loads. Not only is she, quite frankly, mesmerising as a front woman, she is an excellent songwriter, in charge of the artistic direction of the band and all round talented creative. Flanked by pro-level bassist Becky Baldwin, guitarist Sean Bon and drummer Sam Hobbins, the future is looking very bright for this band and I consider myself very lucky to have seen them before they blow up HUGE 😍 What was most beautiful was seeing the care and attention she paid to talking with every one who wanted to chat to her and have a photo taken. You could see her work ethic and respectful attitude in action the entire night.
Things can be different - we made this wonderful show happen together. Looking forward to seeing you all at the next one. Until then - Peace & Integrity 💜✌
